The unpopular President, Andrew Johnson, had been impeached while in office. Although not convicted of his offence, it showed that he would not be nominated by the Republican party for reelection. They instead chose military hero, Ulysses S. Grant, to run on the Republican ticket. The Democrats chose Horatio Seymour as their candidate. The results of the election were:

candidates popular vote electoral vote
Ulysses S. Grant 3,013,421 214
Horatio Seymour 2,706,829 80
Non-Voters 0 81
