Saying that the P-51 destroyed the Luftwaffe may be simplistic. While the airforce was the weakest area of the Germans technologically (until near the war's end), the Luftwaffe was destroyed by overwhelming numbers which the Germans couldn't match, especially when bombing of Germany commenenced in earnest.
