Smith Act of 1940

The Smith Act of 1940 made it illegal to advocate the overthrow of the United States government by force, or to be involved with any such group. The law was used during the 1940s to imprison members of the Communist Party of the United States of America.
The act was named after its author, Howard W. Smith, (D–VA).[1]
