Robert Bruce Spencer (born 1962 in Bedford, NH), is a popular though controversial polemic writer against the islamization of modern society and author of articles and books relating to Islamic terrorism (Jihad). Of Greek heritage, Spencer’s grandparents came from Turkey, where shortly after World War I, they were offered the “choice” of converting to Islam or leaving the country. Spencer describes himself as Christian and Catholicis currently part of the Greek Orthodox Church. Spencer received a B.A. and M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Although his degrees were both in early Christian studies, he became interested in Islam because of his grandparents’ experience. Critics complain that he has no degree in Islamic studies, but he has made an intensive self-study of it for over 20 years. He writes daily for the “Jihad Watch” founded in 2003. And is a co-founder and leader in the Freedom Defense Initiative (FDI) and Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA). Predictably, Spencer is demeaned by his critics as an Islam hater. Benazir Bhutto (1953 - 2007) called Spencer a "radical intellectual" and accused him of "falsely constructing a divide between Islam and West." Spencer is the founder director of Jihad Watch, a program of the David Horowitz Freedom Center.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center, was founded in 1988 by David Horowitz (born 1939), who is an American neo-conservative writer (member of the New Left in the late 1960s) who was born to a Jewish family in Forest Hills.
