specifically named first amendment protected speech as possible violation of ‘harassment’ policies
Controversy
In 2007, the university was criticized for denying tenure of astronomy professor Guillermo Gonzalez, allegedly because of his acceptance of intelligent design. Additionally, news broke in 2016 that Iowa State University was requiring students to sign off on their "harassment policies" in order to graduate. However, this document specifically cited the first amendment right to free speech as a possible violation of the policy. The Alliance Defending Freedom sued them in the case of Dunn v. Leath over this illegal action.
