Edom in the Bible is a name for Esau and his descendant nation. The nation existed as long ago as the 11th century B.C., but disappeared due to the Jewish-Roman Wars. The Hebrew word 'Edom' (אדם or אדום) means 'red' or 'red stuff', and is a reference to the red stew that Esau asked of Jacob in exchange for Esau's birthright.[1]
