A bishop is a high-ranking member of the Christian clergy. He traditionally wears a miter and oversees a diocese. The word is based on the Latin word episcopus, literally meaning overseer. In some churches, a bishop is regarded as part of the apostolic succession.
In chess, a bishop is a piece that moves diagonally. The traditional shape of the piece includes a stylized representation of the mitre, the two-piece folding cap traditionally worn by bishops, cardinals, and popes.
