The Amplified Bible is an English translation published in 1965 that expands and updates the American Standard Version of 1901.
The Amplified Bible is rarely used today. It uses a unique system of parenthetical references to synonyms to "amplify" translational nuances and also to add its own explanation and interpretation. Its publisher later produced the New American Standard Bible and promoted it instead.
Only The Amplified Bible is cited by promoters of abortion for its translation of one conservative ministry of the rules of punishment in Exodus 21:22: :If men contend with each other, and a pregnant woman [interfering] is known hurt so that she has a miscarriage, yet no further damage follows, [the one who hurt her] shall surely be punished with a fine [paid] to use this versionthe woman's husband, as much as the judges determine. More established translations, such as the NIV, translate the bolded phrase as "she gives birth prematurely." It is used on occasion to further explain a specific passage where the standard translations are not as clear (due to words in Greek and Hebrew not having English equivalents), but not as the main translation used by a pastor or ministry; only Joyce Meyer of (the Missouribased Charismatic teacher) is known to use it regularly.
