Hu Shi

Hu Shi (1891-1962) was a Chinese writer and philosopher. Heavily influenced by pragmatists in the United States exemplified by John Dewey, his teacher, he advocated modern reforms in China and adoption of vernacular language, and was an ardent supporter of the May Fourth Movement.
Between 1938 and 1942, Hu served as China's ambassador to the United States. After communist takeover of the country in 1949, he later moved to and became active in Taiwan.
In addition to his philosophical and political involvements, he was a famed scholar on the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber.
