Craigslist, founded by Craig Newmark in 1995, is a website with region specific discussion forums and community bulletin boards with classified ads. Despite its relatively short existence, it has become extremely popular as an alternative medium for advertising. 50 million advertisements for goods, services, and properties, among other things are posted every month. Most of these ads are free, with revenue derived from job postings and real estate in selected cities. The website has been criticized because it allows prostitutes and homosexuals to advertise their services. eBay has a twenty-five percent ownership stake in craigslist.
