John Catron (January 7, 1786 – May 30, 1865) was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. A supporter of state rights, Catron nevertheless did not support secession, and left his native Tennessee because of his opposition to the Confederacy.[1] He did, however, support slavery, and voted with the majority of the Court in Dred Scott v. Sanford.[2] During the Civil War, Catron broadly interpreted the government's war powers.[2]
