Supervised release

Supervised release is court-ordered supervision of convicted federal defendants that begins after they have served their prison sentences. It is distinct from federal probation, which is imposed in lieu of a prison sentence, and federal parole, which before its abolition in the 1980s, was imposed when defendants were released from prison before the completion of their full prison term.
