Okinawa Island is a part of a collection of islands that were under Japanese control during World War II, and remain part of Japan today. This was the site of the bloodiest battle between the United States and Japan of the War, beginning on April 1, 1945.
A total of 60,000 U.S. troops landed on Okinawa Island in the largest amphibious attack of the War in the Pacific. A total of 12,000 Americans died and 36,000 were wounded. The Japanese sunk or damaged 400 American ships.[1]
The battle inflicted casualties of more than 100,000 on Japan. But their kamikaze suicide attacks actually grew more intense with the greater number of injuries.[2]
