Liberty Heights is yet another leftist look at America in the 1950s, seen through the eyes of an atheistic middle class Jewish family in Baltimore, who are blessed by in their ignorance to beatify socialism while stooping to biased talk against Joe McCarthy. But the conscious point of the movie is that (white) Jews are just as prejudiced as any other whites, and that inter-racial romance will break down this prejudice. The downside of all this optimism comes in the intertwining of the film's three character arcs: the father is in the numbers racket, using a burlesque club as a front; the older son is crushing on a non-Jewish girl; the younger son is dating a black girl.
