Yellow Dog Democrat

A Yellow Dog Democrat is a very loyal, conservative Democrat. The phrase originated in the South at the turn of the 20th century. Presumably, a Southern voter "would vote for a mangy yellow dog before he/she would vote for a Republican."[1]
