The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) is an advanced post-graduate research degree that generally requires the completion of a thesis. In the United States, the degree is typically conferred upon graduate students who are matriculated in PhD programs and who have successfully completed the required course work and qualifying examinations, but have yet to defend a doctoral dissertation. A body of original research undertaken by the candidate is usually required.
