Ebonics is a psudo-accademic term coined in the 1970's by African-American college students to give legitimacy to the colloquial dialect spoken by uneducated underclasses.

The term became more widespred in 1996 with the Okland School Board controversy, where the teaching of American Engilsh was replaced with the teaching of this new 'dialect'.
