Exegesis consists of a thorough interpretation of the Bible. The term is taken from the Greek word ἐξηγεῖσθαι, which means "to lead out."

The term exegesis can also describe scholarly analysis of other authoritative texts. The term Biblical exegesis is often used to distinguish the two meanings.
