Barack Hussein Obama II (born Honolulu,[1][2] August 4, 1961) is the 2008 nominee of the Democratic Party for president,[3] Obama has served as a freshman Democratic Senator from Illinois since 2004. On August 23 he chose Senator Joseph Biden as his running mate. In 2007, Obama was rated the most liberal Senator by the National Journal, who had rated Senator John Kerry the most liberal senator during his presidential run as well.[4]

Obama voted against strengthening law enforcement. The gang-like murder of the 7-year-old nephew of the popular American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson was discovered Oct. 27, 2008 in Chicago, and the suspect is a convicted felon who had violated his parole conditions.[5] Yet "Obama was one of only three Illinois senators to vote against a proposal making it a criminal offense for convicts on probation or on bail to have contact with a street gang."[6]
