Litmus test refers to the use of litmus paper as a pH indicator. It is also a phrase referring to questions designed to determine a person's opinion of social issues.

Chemistry

In chemistry, a piece of litmus paper is placed in a solution. Chemical reactions withacids cause it to turn red, while reactions with alkalines cause it to turn blue.

Politics

The phrase "litmus test" is applied to questions designed to determine a person's opinion of social issues. They are common in political interviews, and liberals love to use them to exaggerate and demonize the views of conservatives.

Example

"Where do you stand on Roe v. Wade" is a typical litmus test on the issue of abortion.
