Ngo Dinh Diem was the first president of South Vietnam after its partition split into northern and southern parts in late 1950s. North Vietnamese desire to unite Vietnam under their rule dogged Ngo Dinh Diem and his country through his leadership.
In 1963, South Vietnamese generals with the help of US ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge took over South Vietnam and assassinated Ngo Dinh Diem.
