The Commonwealth of Dominica is an island state in the Caribbean Sea. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978. Dominica is a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations and its head of state is Queen Elizabeth II.

Geography

Dominica is located in the Lesser Antilles or Windward Islands, part of the Caribbean chain of islands. It lies between the French islands of Martinique (to its south) and Guadeloupe (to its north]], and has a land area of 754 square kilopmetres. The capital city is Roseau. Dominica has a population of 72,500 (mid 2008 estimate).

History and Politics

Dominica was colonised by France, having overcome fierce resistance from the indigenous Carib people (3000 Caribs, the last pre-columbian people to survive in the Caribbean, live on Dominica). In 1763 it was ceded to the United Kingdom, which ruled the island until 1978. A corrupt post-independence administratuion was replaced in 1980 by a government led by the Conservative Mary Eugenia Charles. Under her 15 year rule, the island and its opeople prospered.
