"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

I think it is fair to say that all here support the principle of the Second Amendment. So just as an informal survey, how many of us are prepared to support that principle by actually bearing arms? Feel free to answer using the simple format outlined below.

  • There are legal firearms in my house (whether owned by editor/spouse/parents/children Yes/No
  • I received training as a member of the armed forces/law enforcement in the safe/effective use of firearms Yes/No
  • I have used a firearm as a legal response towards another person Yes/No

I'll kick off the survey

  1. Yes
  2. Yes
  3. Yes

All "No's" for me. I'm not a sportsman and I don't see any imminent threat to our national security that would require me taking up arms. ("Wolverines!!!" *ahem* Sorry.) I'd like to say, though, that the idea that being prepared to support the Second Amendment means actually owning guns is a bit off. Look at it this way: we all support free speech, but that doesn't mean we all have to go out and swear, create pornography or participate in a Klan rally to show we support it. All no's for me as well, and I don't support the Supreme Court's reading of the Second Amendment either. I believe it refers to a militia only, and hope one day that decision is overturned and cities can once again ban ownership of firearms. --Jareddr 08:52, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
