Lázaro Cárdenas del Río (Jiquilpan, Michoacán, May 21, 1895 - Ciudad de México Oct. 19, 1970) was the President of Mexico from 1934-1940. He ended an unfair land monopoly which was taking advantage of the Mexican peasants.

On the evening of March 18, 1938, he took control of the Mexican oil wells from foreign investors. He also nationalized the railway industries.

After his presidential term, Lazaro Cárdenas served as secretary of defense through 1945. His son Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano and his grandson Lázaro Cárdenas Batel are also prominent politicians.
