A proper noun is the noun that is the name of a specific person, place, or thing. In English, they should always be capitalized.

Examples:

  • "a man" is not a proper noun, but "Philo Drummond" is.
  • "a town" is not proper, but "Jonestown" is.
  • "a sword" is non-proper, but "Excalibur" is proper.
