Hypathia of Alexandria (AD c.350/370-415) was a female scientist, mathematician and philosopher of late Roman Egypt. She taught Platonic and Aristotelean philosophy, charted the movements of the planets, and is believed to have been the inventor of the hydrometer. In 415 she was murdered by a Christian mob.
