Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is a holiday in Mexico. It means '5th of May', because it is celebrated that day.
On Cinco de Mayo Mexicans celbrate that on May 5 1862 a French army was defeated by the Mexicans in the Battle of Puebla. The French tried to conquer Mexico to install an emperor, but it took them more than two years to even reach Mexico City. At Puebla they were defeated by general Ingacio Zaragoza, although their amry was twice the size of the Mexican army.
Cinco de Mayo is also celebrated by many people in the southwest of the United States, especially in Texas. This is not only because general Zaragoza was born in Texas when it was not yet American, but also because there are many Mexicans living in this part of the country, both legally and illegally. Some people believe it's wrong to celebrate a foreign holiday and that Mexicans will push away the American culture that way. However, there are also people who believe it is good to celebrate a French defeat, because there is often a lot of anti-American sentiment in France.
