The "unseen" is a term that refers to what is not subject to direct observation by any of the five senses.<ref>See, e.g., 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV) ("So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.")
Love is an obvious example of something important that is unseen. Intelligence is another example. Additional examples include:
- deterrence
- Newtonian action-at-a-distance
- the invisible hand
Materialists generally deny the existence of the unseen.
