Eldridge Cleaver (1935 – 1998) was a black militant and later a civil rights leader. In his autobiography Soul on Ice (1969) he wrote:
- Nurtured by the fires of the controversy over segregation, I was soon aflame with indignation over my newly discovered social status, and inwardly I turned away from America with horror, disgust and outrage. (page 22)
