In the case Smith v. Allwright (1944) the United States Supreme Court ruled that a white primary was unconstitutional because it violated the Fifteenth Amendment's prohibition against voting discrimination based on race. [1]

The case originated around a Texas rules which barred African Americans from participation in primary elections. The case brought an end to voting discrimination by overruling a previous ruling in the case of Grove v. Townsend.[2]
