Warren E. Burger (1907-1995) worked in the United States Department of Justice under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower nominated Burger for the United States Court of Appeals in 1956 for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Burger was named Chief Justice for the U. S. Supreme Court by President Richard Nixon in 1969. He sided with conseravatives on most cases and helped to hold in check the liberal decisions of the Earl Warren, his predecessor. He also spoke for a unaminous Court supporting of a mandate for the Watergate tapes which brought about Nixon's resignation.
