Harakiri is Japanese ritual suicide, more formally called seppuku, considered an honorable way out of a shameful situation especially for a military man (see also Samurai). In the past, a warriors second would simultaneously decapitate the suicider with a katana or broad sword, to ensure completion of the act. It has sometimes been used as a form a social protest.
