The Merchant of Venice is a play by William Shakespeare and possibly his greatest play. It involves the lawsuit between Antonio, a Merchant (non-Jew), and Shylock, a jew. It also has a subplot, in which a fair lady, Portia (non-Jew), is courted by three gentlemen, who must open three gold caskets. [1]
