An anchorite (pronounced ANG-kuh-right) is someone who lives in seclusion, typically for religious reasons. An example would be a hermit.

The term “anchor” had been used for hundreds of years to describe hermits. The etymology of that term is different from the term anchor used in connection with ships, though the spelling of the latter was influential on the use of the former.
