The terms Freedom Fries and Freedom Toast were created in 2003 to replace French fries, to express dismay with France by Republicans Bob Ney and Walter B. Jones. The Congressional Cafeterias changed the name back to French fries in 2006. [1] A good example of a political fad that had a short life.

During the First World War, some Americans called sauerkraut 'liberty cabbage' in an attempt to disassociate themselves with all things German.
