Matthew was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus.

Matthew was a tax collector when he left his job to follow Jesus. Matthew wrote notes in Hebrew, which were discovered much later. He was the author of the first Gospel, which was written in Greek primarily for the Jewish audience.
