Indira Gandhi became the second prime minister of India when her father, Jawaharial Nehru, died. During her rule there was an increase in agricultural production known as the Green Revolution, as well as attempts to limit population growth with strict birth control. During a time of political unrest known as "The Crisis," Gandhi suspended parts of the democratic process. The people responded by voting her out of office in 1977. In 1980 she regained power, as Sikhs who wanted an independent state were engaged in a violent campaign against the Indian state. She ordered an attack on the Sikh Golden Temple; in response, two of her Sikh bodyguards retaliated by assassinating her in November 1984. She was succeeded by her son Rajiv.
