Judah, son of the patriarch, Jacob, was the fourth son of Leah and the fourth of Jacob's sons overall as recorded in the book of Genesis in the Bible. He was the founder of the tribe of Judah one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. It was from the name Judah that the nation of Judea was named after the partition of Israel following King Solomon's demise (1 Kings 11:31; 12:17-21). The nation of Judea was made up of the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin. If is from the name Judea that the English name Jew is derived. Jacob's deathbed blessing to Judah (Genesis 49:8-12) is considered to be a Messianic prophecy and in Christianity is seen as foreshadowing the coming of Jesus.
