Exotheology, or UFO religion, refers to the (imaginary) theology of (imaginary) extraterrestrial beings. This requires a strong form of belief in life in outer space: it implies not only that life in outer space somehow exists, but that it is intelligent and even has a theology of its own.
Exotheology was pursued by liberals in the 1960s through 1970s. Most scientists in the late 1970s, such as President Jimmy Carter's Carl Sagan, believed in intelligent life in outer space. "Scientists today generally assume, and the mathematical probabilities favor, the existence of intelligent life among the myriad planets wheeling through the cosmos."[1]
