The photoelectric effect is a natural phenomenon in which electrons are emitted by a metallic surface when it is exposed to electromagnetic radiation.

Albert Einstein published a heuristic explanation in 1905. It included the first mention of "quanta" of light energy - a concept crucial to the development of quantum mechanics.
