2.5D describes an aesthetic whereby three-dimensional objects are camera-locked (set) in a two-dimensional plane. Less commonly, two-dimensional objects are used in a three-dimensional plane.[1][2] Texture may also be applied to paintings and other flat images to add depth (3rd dimensional aspect).[3] Additionally, with the rise of video idol's utility of virtual avatars, avatars which appear three-dimensional but are made of several two dimensional layers classify as 2.5D.[4]
