Diplomacy is the conduct by government officials of negotiations and other relations between nations. A person engaging in diplomacy is referred to as a diplomat. One common type of diplomat is an ambassador, who represents his country at foreign capitals.

Generally speaking, when diplomacy fails, wars begin.

  • During the Cuban Missile Crisis; President Kennedy used diplomacy to defuse the crisis by negotiating a secret trade with the Soviet Union to remove missiles from Cuba and Turkey. This helped prevent an all-out war. [2]
  • The cold war came to an end with President Ronald Reagan using diplomacy. As Margaret Thatcher’s words put it "Ronald Reagan had ended the Cold War without firing a shot." [3]
  • President Donald Trump meet and shook hands with Kim Jong Un to neutralize the threat of North Korea. [4]
