A general strike is a strike that affects not merely one company, but every company and every field of human work in a country.

General strikes are an extreme form of protest intended to induce the government to enact laws friendly to "labor" as a political movement. But sometimes a political movement might call a general strike to aid in overthrowing the government or ending what that movement perceives as hostile occupation.
