The German battleship Bismarck was one of the largest and most powerful ships the world had ever seen. It was in service during World War II. Commanded by Admiral Günther Lütjens, it is famous for sinking the HMS Hood, the pride of Britain's Royal Navy, in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Pursued by dozens of British and Polish ships, it was finally sunk by the collective efforts of the HMS King George V, HMS Rodney, and others. The ship was named after Chansellor Otto von Bismarck, who unified the German states in the 1800s.
