Avon

Avon was a county in south west England created in 1974 to give the city of Bristol its own county, from parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset. It was abolished again in 1996.

Avon is also the name of four rivers in England, and comes from the Welsh/Celtic afon, meaning "river".
