Cthulhu (pronounced "Khlûl'hloo" or "Kathooloo") (Other spellings: Kutulu, Ktulu, Cthulu, Kthulhut, Thu Thu, Tulu) is a fictional Pre-Judeo-Christian deity/demon variously described as a "sleeping" or "dreaming" in the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Cthulhu sleeps in the sunken city of R'lyeh and when the stars are right, will reawaken ushering in the destruction of humanity.

A correlation has been proposed[1] between the symbology of the mythos and both the Christian devil Satan and creation science in Christianity: in the stories the being Cthulhu corrupts creatures from God and turns their worship inward, on their own bodies, with horrific results[2]; furthermore, many of the tales in the mythos feature the triumph of the supernatural over established science[3]. It should be recognized, however, that Lovecraft was an avowed atheist and that the symbology is likely coincidental.
