Samuel Wilberforce (1804-1873) was the Bishop of Oxford, England. He is best known for his participation in the famous debate in 1860 on the theory of evolution with T. H. Huxley. He was a major figure in the continuation of the Oxford Movement, which sought to introduce the practices of the Catholic Church into the Church of England. He was nicknamed "Soapy Sam".
He was the son of the antislavery activist William Wilberforce.
