Bartholomew Diaz was a Portuguese explorer who attempted unsuccessfully to reach India in the late 1400s. He did manage to sail around the tip of Africa (the Cape of Good Hope) in 1487. Vasco da Gama, also of Portugal, would succeed in reaching India by the same route ten years later.
