The photoelectric effect is a natural phenomenon in which electrons are emitted by a metallic surface when it is exposed to electromagnetic radiation.
The photoelectric effect was explained by Albert Einstein in 1905. This explanation included the first mention of "quanta" of energy - a concept crucial to the development of quantum mechanics.
