Philadelphia is a small community in central Mississippi.
It was the scene of a brutal government-assisted murder in June 1964 of three civil rights activists (two young Jewish men from New York City and a black man from Mississippi) who were falsely arrested by the local police (upset with their attempts to end racial segregation), then turned over to the Ku Klux Klan who murdered them and buried their remains in an earthen dam. The events led to the popular movie Mississippi Burning.
